Lot 62: DAVID ROBERTS, R.A, DOME OF THE ROCK, JERUSALEM, TINTED LITHOGRAPH

A mid-19th century tinted lithograph on heavy wove paper depicting a topographical view of Jerusalem. The scene shows the Mosque of Omar (Dome of the Rock) and the Temple Mount viewed from an elevated terrace. In the foreground, a group of five men are rendered in traditional Ottoman-era attire; one figure is in prostration on a prayer rug, two others stand or sit in contemplation, and a fourth stands at the left holding a long gun. A seated figure is visible further to the right. The background features the architectural complex of the Old City with its domes, minarets, and fortified walls. The print is executed in black ink with a warm sepia tint.

Several marks are visible on the sheet. At the bottom left, within the stone, is a cursive inscription reading Mosque of Omar shewing the site of the Temple. Below the image at the left is the printed name David Roberts, R.A. and at the right is L. Haghe lith. The central title is printed in capital letters as MOSQUE OF OMAR SHEWING THE SITE OF THE TEMPLE. Below this is a publication line reading London Published by F.G. Moon, 20 Threadneedle St. A date is present at the end of this line but is not clearly legible. The reverse of the sheet is blank.
