TWO SECTIONS FROM A CALLIGRAPHIC GENEALOGICAL SCROLL (SILSILENAME) BY SHAYKH SAYYID MUSTAFA BADR AL-DIN, OTTOMAN TURKEY, 1784-85

A pair of sections from a hand-rendered Ottoman calligraphic genealogical scroll, known as a silsilename, executed in black ink and red pigment on paper. The scroll features a complex lineage chart arranged in a hierarchical tree format, consisting of numerous interconnected circular medallions containing Arabic script. This work was copied by Shaykh Sayyid Mustafa Badr al-Din in Ottoman Turkey and is dated AH 1199, corresponding to 1784-85. Each section is mounted on a dark mat and housed in a modern gilt-finished wood frame. The layout follows a central vertical axis with lateral branches, where the nodes are connected by thin vertical and diagonal lines to indicate descent. Red ink is used to highlight primary figures or specific branches of the lineage. A block of densely written text is visible at the lower end of the second section.
