Lot 355: AN EMBROIDERED SILK AND VELVET CHILD SHORT JACKET, OTTOMAN OR ANATOLIAN, EARLY 19TH CENTURY

This Ottoman or Anatolian Early 19th Century short jacket is constructed from a gold-toned silk ground densely worked with all-over vermicelli or scroll embroidery in matching thread. The garment is designed as a cropped bolero-style jacket featuring short sleeves and a stand-up collar. The collar, sleeve cuffs, hem, and a large central panel on the reverse are made from a contrasting reddish-brown velvet. These velvet elements are heavily decorated with couched metallic thread in elaborate scrolling floral and foliate motifs. The large back panel incorporates a prominent central mihrab or arch design. Small amber-coloured glass cabochons are set into the embroidery on the sleeve and back panels. The jacket fastens at the front with seven small, round fabric-covered buttons and corresponding thread loops. The interior is fully lined with a plain mustard-yellow silk fabric.
