Lot 338: A TIBETO-CHINESE GILT BRONZE FIGURE OF A SEATED BUDDHA, 17TH-18TH CENTURY

A cast and fire-gilded bronze figure representing a seated Buddha, depicted in the dharmachakra mudra, the gesture of teaching. The figure is seated in dhyanasana atop a double lotus pedestal. He is clad in a monastic robe that leaves the right shoulder bare, with the fabric rendered in rhythmic, well-defined folds. The face features downcast eyes and a subtle smile, with faint traces of red pigment remaining on the lips. The head is covered in tight snail-like curls surmounted by a prominent ushnisha, both of which retain significant traces of traditional blue pigment. The sculpture exhibits a worn patina with extensive loss to the fire-gilding on the protruding surfaces, revealing the darker oxidized bronze beneath. The underside of the rim shows several light, haphazard diagonal score marks that do not form readable characters or a name. The base is hollow and lacks its original base plate.
