Lot 310: AN ANGLO-INDIAN SADELI MOSAIC DESK INK STAND, VIZAGAPATAM, 19TH CENTURY

This 19th-century desk stand is constructed of wood and extensively decorated with Sadeli micro-mosaic inlay. The Sadeli technique, characteristic of 19th-century craftsmanship from the Bombay and Surat regions of India, involves bundling thin rods of dyed wood, bone, and metal wire into geometric patterns, which are then sliced into veneers and applied to the surface. The primary decorative motif is a three-dimensional tumbling blocks or isometric cube design, bordered by intricate bands of micro-stars and geometric fretwork. The tiered top is divided into five separate compartments, all featuring inset mosaic panels. A single long drawer is located at the front of the base, fitted with a circular brass ring pull. The piece is supported by four cast metal claw-and-ball feet with a dark patina.
