Lot 282: A QAJAR GOLD-DAMASCENED STEEL SHIELD (SIPAR) PERSIA, 19TH CENTURY

A Qajar gold-damascened steel shield (sipar) from 19th-century Persia. The circular convex body is constructed from steel and finished with a brass rim. The central boss is embossed with a stylised sun-face (Khorshid), which is surrounded by four smaller domed bosses and radiating foliate panels. The decoration features intricate engraved arabesque patterns and multiple concentric bands of calligraphic script. Visible remnants of gold damascening are present across the surface of the central field and within the decorative bands. The reverse retains a padded textile liner, showing heavy staining and age-related wear, with two braided cord handles secured to iron rings.
