Lot 247: AN INDO-PERSIAN WROUGHT IRON SUFI ZAFAR TAKIEH WITH ELEPHANT TERMINALS, 18TH - 19TH CENTURY

This object is a wrought iron ceremonial crutch or armrest of the type known as a Zafar Takieh, likely originating from Northern India and dating to the 18th or 19th century. The piece features a T-shaped construction designed as a support for use by nobility or Sufi saints while seated or standing for long periods. The horizontal handle is slightly arched and terminates at either end in elephant heads with their trunks curled back towards the forehead. The handle joins to a long, straight shaft with a faceted octagonal cross-section that tapers towards a blunt, rounded terminal.
