A CARVED AGATE MORTAR AND PESTLE SET, PROBABLY INDIAN, 19TH – 20TH CENTURY
A hand-carved mortar and pestle set fashioned from agate (chalcedony). The mortar is designed with a rectangular central basin, featuring four U-shaped notches carved into the side walls. The ends of the vessel are elaborately sculpted into three-lobed foliate forms, suggestive of the lingzhi fungus head. The piece is supported by a short, integral rectangular foot. The accompanying pestle is a solid cylindrical form with rounded ends. The stone displays a waxy lustre and varied translucency, with a colour palette ranging from milky white to pale blue-grey.
