Lot 232: A BENIN BRONZE LEOPARD FIGURE, NIGERIA

This cast metal figure depicts a standing leopard, an iconographic motif from the Benin culture of Nigeria representing royal authority. The object is produced from a copper alloy, likely bronze or brass, using the lost-wax casting method. The leopard is rendered with stylised features including a prominent square muzzle, exposed fangs, and deep horizontal whisker incisions. The almond-shaped eyes feature raised pupils, and the ears are rounded with interior textural details. The exterior of the animal, including the legs and tail, is covered in a pattern of incised concentric circles representing spots. The tail curves downwards. The figure is hollow-cast, and the undersides of the paws are open to reveal the interior cavity and residual casting material.
