Lot 222: AN INDIAN BIDRIWARE PEDESTAL SIDE TABLE, DECCAN, 19TH CENTURY

An Indian Bidriware pedestal side table or display stand, likely produced in the Deccan region. The piece is constructed from a blackened zinc-based alloy featuring intricate silver inlay throughout. The circular top is designed with a deep scalloped apron and is decorated with a central floral medallion surrounded by dense scrolling foliate vines and small star-shaped flowers. A repeating trefoil border follows the inner rim of the tabletop. The top is supported by a tapering pedestal stem, which includes a cross-hatched collar and inlaid floral sprays. The stem terminates in a flared circular foot, embellished with a repeating border that matches the top, along with additional inlaid floral motifs. The construction consists of cast metal sections joined by a central internal rod. The characteristic black surface finish, which provides a high contrast to the polished silver inlay, is achieved through traditional chemical treatment of the zinc-alloy. The interior and underside of the base and top reveal the raw, oxidised state of the cast metal and the central assembly point.
