The exterior surface is extensively decorated with bands of engraved and chased ornamentation. A wide central frieze contains a bold, stylised calligraphic inscription in Thuluth script, set against a dense background of scrolling foliate arabesques. This main band is bordered above and below by narrow registers of complex interlaced knotwork. The lower portion of the body is decorated with a series of lobed medallions containing floral motifs, while the rim is finished with a band of repeating scalloped patterns.
