Lot 203: A CAIRO WARE SILVER-INLAID BRASS CHARGER, CIRCA 1900S

A circular decorative metal charger, commonly known as Cairo Ware, featuring silver inlay on a brass body. This item is an example of Mamluk Revival metalwork, a style originating in Cairo and Damascus during the late 19th to early 20th century to emulate 14th-century Mamluk Sultanate aesthetics. The central design consists of a square field densely filled with scrolling foliate and floral arabesque motifs in silver. This central square is flanked by four rectangular cartouches containing stylised Arabic calligraphy in silver inlay, executed in a Thuluth-style script. The corners of the square are accented with panels of interlaced geometric knots. The primary decorative field is bordered by a circular band of silver foliate scrolls, and the raised outer rim features a continuous interlaced chain or braid pattern in silver. The reverse of the charger ) is heavily patinated and exhibits indistinct reddish-brown marks in the upper-right quadrant of the inner circle.
