AN UMAYYAD OR EARLY ABBASID AMBER GLASS PYXIS WITH CONICAL LID/ INKWELL, MESOPOTAMIA, 8TH/ 9TH CENTURY

The body is formed from translucent amber glass which has acquired a vibrant golden iridescence and a mottled surface texture through natural weathering. It features a wide, flat projecting rim and a corresponding flared foot. The lid, fashioned from a contrasting pale yellow glass, is conical in shape and topped with a small, pulled spherical finial. Thick rings of white mineral encrustation are present around the inner mouth of the jar and the internal flange of the lid.
