Lot 160: A MOROCCAN FEZ POLYCHROME GLAZED CERAMIC TWIN HANDLED WATER JUG, 19TH CENTURY

A Moroccan tin-glazed earthenware water vessel, traditionally known as a berrada, originating from Fez. The vessel features a bulbous body and a tapering neck surmounted by a decorative domed finial. It is constructed with two arched handles, one of which includes a small integrated pouring spout. The polychrome decoration is hand-painted over a white slip in a classic palette of cobalt blue, turquoise-green, and yellow, defined by manganese black outlines. The main decorative register consists of almond-shaped mandorla medallions containing stylised foliage, surrounded by a dense geometric lattice of yellow and blue diamonds. Horizontal bands featuring chevrons, dots, and scalloped edges separate the decorative zones on the body and neck. The base is of a simple footed form and has been drilled with a circular hole for prior electrification.
