A TURQUOISE-GLAZED RAQQA CERAMIC EWER WITH BLACK UNDERGLAZE DECORATION, SYRIA, 12TH CENTURY

The vessel features a bulbous body, a wide cylindrical neck, a vertical strap handle, and a short tubular spout attached to the shoulder and neck. It is decorated with black underglaze painting beneath a vibrant alkaline turquoise glaze. The decorative scheme consists of a wide band of stylised Kufic calligraphy encircling the neck, framed by thick horizontal borders. The shoulder and mid-body are sparsely adorned with small three-dot rosettes. The glaze has pooled into thick teardrop drips above a short, unglazed ring foot, revealing the buff-coloured ceramic body.

Height: 11 cm.
