Lot 146: A SAMANID BUFFWARE POTTERY BOWL WITH FIGURAL BIRD DECORATION, NISHAPUR OR SAMARKAND, 10TH CENTURY

The bowl is constructed from a buff-coloured earthenware body with a deep, slightly flaring form resting on a low ring foot. The decoration is executed in slip-painted polychrome pigments of yellow, turquoise-green, and manganese brown under a clear glaze. The interior centre is dominated by a large, stylised bird, possibly a peacock, depicted in profile with an elaborate scalloped tail and geometric patterns adorning its body. The bird is surrounded by leafy and floral sprigs. The inner rim is encircled by a continuous interlocking scroll border. The exterior is decorated with a repeating frieze of upright almond-shaped motifs in alternating yellow and turquoise-green, some containing internal dots. The base is plain, revealing the unglazed buff ceramic body.
