Lot 144: A NISHAPUR POTTERY BOWL, NORTH EAST PERSIA, 10TH CENTURY

A 10th-century Nishapur buff-ware pottery bowl from North East Iran. The vessel is of conical form, decorated in manganese-brown pigment over a cream-coloured slip. The interior composition features a large, stylized central bird, possibly a peacock, surrounded by scrolling foliate palmettes and clusters of dotted motifs. A small hand-painted mark is visible in the centre of the bird’s body, consisting of a vertical stroke intersected by a horizontal stroke, with two small diagonal strokes branching from the top of the vertical line; the mark is not legible as a name or specific signature. The exterior surface shows a plain buff slip and an intact footring.
