A SAMANID SLIP-PAINTED CALLIGRAPHIC POTTERY BOWL, NISHAPUR OR SAMARKAND, 10TH CENTURY

The ceramic vessel is made of earthenware with underglaze slip-painted decoration. The interior is decorated with a single line of bold floriated Kufic calligraphy in black slip against a cream-coloured ground. The script features elongated vertical letters and terminals that blossom into trefoil floral motifs. The exterior surface is plain and displays variegated colouring from burial.
