Lot 141: A SAMANID STYLE SLIP-PAINTED CALLIGRAPHIC POTTERY BOWL, PERSIA, 18TH - 19TH CENTURY

The bowl is constructed from a buff earthenware body, coated in a white slip ground, and decorated with a dark brown or black slip. The entire surface is finished with a transparent lead glaze. The form features a shallow well with a wide, flaring flange and a short foot ring. The primary decoration consists of a band of highly Kufic calligraphy encircling the flange, characterised by elongated vertical strokes and angular, geometric forms. A single small dot in dark slip marks the centre of the well. A splash of green copper-oxide pigment is visible on one section of the rim. No maker’s marks, signatures, or labels are visible on the base or body.
