AN IZNIK STYLE UNDERGLAZE POLYCHROME PAINTED VASE, ULISSE CANTAGALLI POTTERY, ITALY, CIRCA 1880S
A pear-shaped ceramic vase featuring a waisted neck and a slightly flared rim, supported by a low ring foot. The stonepaste body is finished with a white tin-glaze and underglaze painted decoration in a traditional Ottoman Iznik palette, including cobalt blue, Armenian bole red, and sage green with black outlines. The primary decorative scheme on the body consists of alternating vertical sprays of large, stylised tulips and carnations with serrated lanceolate leaves. Small florets and foliate sprigs fill the interstices. The neck and base are bordered by horizontal bands featuring a continuous scrolling wave pattern in blue and green.
