Lot 131: A PERSIAN LACQUERED WOOD ASTRONOMICAL QUADRANT, SAIGNED MOHAMMED YAZDI AND DATED 1282 A.H

An Persian astronomical quadrant, known as a Rub al-Mujayyab, constructed from a single piece of wood and finished with layers of deep reddish-amber lacquer. The instrument is formed as a quarter-circle with two sighting notches inset along one straight edge. The surface is finely marked in black ink with a sine-cosine grid, horary lines, and a degree scale from 0 to 90 along the outer arc. The front face features a lobed cartouche at the lower right containing a signature in black ink; the text begins with the word ‘عمل’ (amal, meaning ‘work of’) followed by a maker’s name Mohammed Yazdi, and the date  (1292 AH, approximately 1875–1876 AD.
