Lot 102: A SILVER AND NIELLO HINGED BELT FITTING, CAUCASIAN, LATE 19TH CENTURY

This silver and niello decorative belt component is composed of five hinged sections, including a central diamond-shaped panel flanked by two trilobed and two rectangular outer sections. Each of the five sections features a central raised conical boss. The front surfaces are intricately hand-engraved with scrolling foliate and rumi-style arabesque motifs, with the recessed areas filled with black niello inlay to create a high-contrast finish. The edges of the plates are punctuated with small circular eyelet loops, which were used to secure the fitting to a leather or textile belt backing.
