AN EGYPTIAN ALABASTER CANOPIC JAR LID OF HUMAN-HEADED IMSETY, NEW KINGDOM, 18TH DYNASTY, CIRCA 1550-1292 B.C.

An Egyptian canopic jar stopper or lid carved from translucent, yellowish-beige calcite, commonly known as Egyptian alabaster. The lid is sculpted in the round to depict a human head, traditionally identified as Imsety, one of the four sons of Horus. The figure is shown wearing a heavy, smooth wig or headdress that frames the face and leaves the prominent, protruding ears exposed. The facial features include almond-shaped eyes with faint outlines, a broad nose, and a serene expression with a slight smile. The sculpture terminates in a short, integral circular base with a flat underside, designed to fit into the aperture of a canopic jar.
