Lot 88: AN EGYPTIAN TURQUOISE GLAZED FAIENCE AMULET OF THE GODDESS TAWERET, LATE PERIOD, CIRCA 664 - 332 BC

An Egyptian faience amuletic figurine representing the goddess Taweret, dating from the Late Period to the Ptolemaic Period (circa 664–30 BC). The deity is depicted in her traditional hybrid form as a bipedal hippopotamus, featuring a swollen pregnant belly and pendulous breasts, symbolizing her role as a protector of childbirth and fertility. The figure includes human-like arms resting at her sides and a distinctive serrated crocodile tail extending down the back. The goddess is positioned standing on an integral rectangular base. An integral suspension loop is located at the top of the head, indicating the piece was intended to be worn as a protective amulet. The figurine is finished in a vibrant turquoise-blue glaze with characteristic dark mineral speckling throughout the ceramic body.
