Lot 314: AN ANTIQUE NEEDLE WORK KASHMIRI KANI WOVEN SHAWL, 19TH CENTURY

This rectangular shawl is a traditional textile from the Kashmir region, produced using the Kani weaving technique. It is woven from fine wool, possibly pashmina or a high-quality goat hair blend. The textile features a dense and intricate all-over jali or lattice pattern, with repeating small-scale boteh (paisley) and stylized floral motifs contained within the diamond-shaped lattice. The colour palette is composed of burnt orange, terracotta, and madder red, accented with deep indigo purple, ochre, and cream. The reverse side of the shawl displays the characteristic discontinuous weft threads typical of the Kani technique, where small wooden bobbins are used to weave each colour section row-by-row, resulting in a textured surface with visible colour transitions.
