Lot 283: A JODHPUR SCHOOL EQUESTRIAN PORTRAIT OF THAKUR SHER SINGH OF OSIAN, RAJASTHAN, 19TH CENTURY

An Indian miniature painting executed in opaque pigments and silver on paper, attributed to the Jodhpur school of Rajasthan. The work depicts a nobleman identified by a verso inscription as Thakur Sher Singh of Osian. He is portrayed in profile, seated upon a large maroon horse in a prancing gait. The figure wears a white jama secured with a yellow patka and an ornate turban decorated with an aigrette. He is accompanied by a retinue of four attendants dressed in white garments and turbans: one walking behind holding a chauri (fly-whisk), two walking alongside the horse bearing swords, and one walking ahead. The composition is set against a mustard-yellow ground with a narrow band of stylised blue hills and sky at the upper margin. The painting is framed by a broad red border. The horse is elaborately caparisoned with silver-pigment harnesses and a prominent yellow tassel. The reverse of the work features a line of Devanagari script and a pencil inscription in English stating Thakur sher singh of Osian Jodhpur school. A numeral 75 is written in red ink. The painting is mounted onto a larger supporting sheet of paper containing fragmented lines of Devanagari text and numbers around the perimeter.
