Lot 278: A RAJASTHANI MINIATURE PAINTING OF A NAYIKA OR RAGINI, LATE 19TH OR EARLY 20TH CENTURY

Depicting a lone female figure, identified as a Nayika or Ragini, in a landscape setting. The subject is portrayed in profile walking across a grassy flowering mound. She is dressed in traditional North Indian attire consisting of a diaphanous yellow choli bodice, a voluminous patterned red and orange lehenga skirt, and a fine gold-bordered sheer dupatta veil. She holds a long-stemmed lotus flower with two buds in her left hand while her right hand is raised toward her head. The composition is set against a vibrant light blue background beneath the delicate drooping branches of a tree. A multi-coloured rainbow-like band is visible at the upper edge of the scene. The work is contained within a simple red and black line border. The painting is presented in a modern gilt-finish frame characterised by a rope-twist border and an off-white card mount. This work was produced in Northern India, likely Rajasthan or the Punjab Hills, and dates to the late 19th or early 20th century.
