Lot 267: A PAIR OF INDIAN CARVED WOOD AND PAINTED FIGURES OF RECUMBENT HORSES, 19TH - 20TH CENTURY

Each horse is depicted resting on an integral, low-profile rectangular base with rounded corners, with its legs tucked beneath the body. The figures are constructed from a buff-coloured earthenware or pottery and decorated with cold-painted pigments rather than glazes. The horses are finished in an off-white or cream-coloured tone, with the manes and tails detailed in blue-grey. Both animals are shown with elaborate saddlery and harnesses, featuring high-backed saddles and decorative saddlecloths. The trappings are embellished with scrolled and floral-style motifs in a palette of turquoise, cobalt blue, and ochre or yellow. Applied or moulded bosses and tassels are visible on the harness sections.
