Lot 259: A MAMLUK REVIVAL SILVER AND COPPER INLAID BRASS HANGING LANTERN, CIRCA 1900

This hanging lantern is constructed from brass in the Mamluk Revival style, characteristic of metalwork produced in Cairo or Damascus during the late 19th or early 20th century. The central body is hexagonal in form, featuring six lobed, arched window openings fitted with translucent glass panels in shades of deep blue, emerald green, and amber. The exterior surfaces are decorated with elaborate metal-to-metal damascene inlay in silver and copper, depicting dense scrolling foliate and arabesque motifs. Both the upper dome and the lower tapering conical base feature intricate hand-pierced openwork designed to diffuse light. Prominent calligraphic cartouches are positioned on the dome and the base, featuring the Arabic characters for Ya Hafiz (O Protector), a common protective invocation. The lantern is further detailed with cast elements including miniature crescent moon finials and turned columns at the angles of the central body. It is suspended by three linked chains connected to a small domed ceiling rose with an iron suspension hook.
