Lot 253: A LARGE ZAND BRASS TORCH STAND (SHAMDAN), PERSIA, 19TH CENTURY

This brass torch stand, known as a shamdan, features a tall cylindrical body transitioning to a flared base. The object is constructed from a base metal, likely brass or copper, which is visible where the silvering has worn away at the rims and edges. The surface is densely ornamented with chased and engraved decoration organised into three primary sections. The upper and lower registers are divided into panels depicting figurative scenes, including figures on horseback, hunters, and animals set against a foliate background. The central body is designed with spiral gadrooning, with each channel containing intricate floral and foliate scrollwork. Two hinged handles are attached to the upper portion of the cylinder with pins. The interior is open, revealing a rough, oxidised surface.
