Lot 234: A SILVER GILT AND THEWA GLASS MINIATURE BOX, INDIA RAJASTHAN, 19TH CENTURY

A small square form decorative box, Indian origin, featuring a hinged lid inset with a Thewa work panel. The lid decoration consists of finely pierced gold foil openwork fused to a translucent red glass ground, a technique characteristic of Pratapgarh Thewa. The central motif depicts a peacock with its tail feathers fanned out in a radial pattern, bordered by intricate foliate scrolls. The frame and body are constructed from silver-gilt, decorated with repoussé and chased foliate scrollwork and central four-petalled floral medallions. The upper and lower edges of the lid and base are finished with beaded borders. The interior of the box is fully gilded with a bright, polished finish.
