Lot 215: A LARGE MAMLUK STYLE ENAMELLED AND GILDED GLASS MOSQUE LAMP, PROBABLY FRANCE, 19TH CENTURY

A large blown glass vessel in the form of a mosque lamp, crafted in the Mamluk Revival style. The honey-tinted glass body is elaborately decorated with polychrome enamelling and gilding. The wide, flared neck features a prominent band of Thuluth calligraphy in gold against a field of dense foliate scrolls, punctuated by three circular medallions containing further calligraphic characters. Below this, a decorative band displays intricate blue and white interlaced geometric knotwork interspersed with small red and green floral motifs. The bulbous body is dominated by a wide horizontal register of bold Thuluth script in gold set against a vibrant cobalt blue ground, surrounded by gilded floral scrollwork. Six clear glass suspension loops are applied to the body. The vessel is supported by a short, flared foot decorated with corresponding floral and calligraphic designs.
