Lot 208: TWO PERSIAN QAJAR MOULDED POLYCHROME POTTERY TILES, 19TH CENTURY

Two Persian Qajar moulded polychrome pottery tiles, dating from the 19th century. Each rectangular architectural tile is decorated with a central figurative hunting scene, known as a shikargah, set within a shaped cartouche. The tiles are executed using the underglaze polychrome painting technique with a palette of cobalt blue, turquoise, manganese purple, pink, and yellow. One tile depicts horsemen and hounds in pursuit of a large feline, surrounded by floral spandrels and a geometric interlaced border at the base. The second tile illustrates hunters on horseback and hounds pursuing boars or deer, framed by floral spandrels and a scrolling floral lower border. The figures are rendered in the characteristic Qajar style, featuring almond-shaped eyes, joined eyebrows, and traditional costumes and turbans.
