Lot 204: AN ARMENIAN PALESTINIAN POTTERY BOWL, JERUSALEM, EARLY 20TH CENTURY

A hand-painted ceramic bowl produced in the Armenian pottery tradition of Jerusalem, Palestine. The vessel features a deep rounded form on a short unglazed foot ring. The interior is decorated under a clear crazed glaze with a central vertical cypress or saz leaf rendered in a raised rust-red pigment. This central motif is flanked by symmetrical scrolling foliage and floral sprays in a palette of cobalt blue, turquoise, and sage green against a white ground. The exterior of the bowl continues the decorative scheme with mottled patterns in blue and green. The unglazed base bears two hand-painted workshop marks: one in brown pigment consisting of a vertical line with a diagonal stroke and horizontal crossbar, and another in blue pigment appearing as a hooked U shape. This style of pottery was established in Jerusalem in the early 20th century, drawing inspiration from Ottoman Iznik and Damascus wares.
