Lot 196: A TIMURID CARVED STONE TILE, CENTRAL ASIA, LATE 14TH - EARLY 15TH CENTURY

The primary face is decorated with a complex program of relief carving featuring a central four-petalled floret contained within an eight-pointed interlaced star. This central motif is enclosed by a square border containing foliate scrollwork or arabesques. The four edges of the block are worked with deep, parallel vertical and diagonal ribbing. The reverse of the tile features a deeply incised chevron or herringbone pattern, designed to serve as a key for mortar when set into an architectural frieze or wall.
