Lot 188: AN INDO-PERSIAN ETCHED STEEL BATTLE AXE TABARZIN, 19TH CENTURY

An Indo-Persian all-metal battle axe, known as a tabarzin, dating to the 19th century and likely originating from Persia or Northern India during the Qajar period. The weapon is constructed entirely of steel with extensive etched decoration throughout. The head features a large, crescent-shaped blade with a curved cutting edge, intricately decorated on both faces with etched scrolling foliate and floral motifs in the Persian style. The central square-sectioned socket is decorated with upright leaf patterns and is surmounted by a long, tapering quadrangular spike. Opposite the blade is a decorative, stylized poll featuring scrolling openwork and etched details. The long, tubular steel haft is similarly decorated with bands of etched chevron or herringbone motifs at intervals and terminates in a rounded globular pommel.
