Lot 105: A LARGE MAMLUK BIFOLIA QURAN PAGES, EGYPT OR SYRIA, 14TH CENTURY

This lot comprises two bifolia, consisting of four leaves and eight pages, from a medieval Quran manuscript. The text is attributed to the Mamluk period of Egypt or Syria, dating to approximately the 14th century. The manuscript is written in a refined Naskh script in dark brown ink on polished paper, with thirteen lines per page. The text contains verses from Surah Ali Imran, including verses 3:72, 3:78, 3:144, and 3:151. The leaves feature sophisticated illumination, including large marginal medallions known as shamsas and triangular juz or hizb markers executed in gold and blue with delicate filigree work. Individual verses are demarcated by small gold rosettes. The script is fully vocalised, with some orthographic markers in gold. A faint, circular ownership seal is visible in the lower margin of one page, although the characters within the stamp are no longer legible. The proportions of the script and margins suggest a quarto format.
