Lot 49: A LARGE MAMLUK ENGRAVED BRASS BOWL / DRUM, EGYPT OR SYRIA, 14TH CENTURY

This large brass bowl or drum is characteristic of Mamluk metalwork from Egypt or Syria, dating to the 14th century. The vessel is of hemispherical form with a slightly upright rim, constructed from brass with hand-incised and engraved decoration. The exterior ornamentation is organized into distinct horizontal registers. The primary central band features monumental calligraphic panels in a bold Thuluth script, separated by four circular medallions containing interlocking floral arabesque motifs. This central register is bordered above and below by narrower bands of repeating geometric and stylized foliate patterns. An additional register of smaller, cursive calligraphic script encircles the lower body near the base. The depth of the engraving suggests the piece likely originally featured silver or gold inlay, which has since been lost. The interior of the bowl displays a dark, aged patina. The underside of the base is plain except for a small, irregular white mark that appears to be a remnant of a paper adhesive label.
