Lot 48: A FATIMID BRONZE INKWELL, EGYPT OR SYRIA , 10TH - 12TH CENTURY

The object is constructed from a cast copper alloy, likely bronze, and features intricate engraved and incised decorations. The lid is designed with concentric bands, including an outer ring of circular medallions with foliate motifs and a primary middle band of Arabic calligraphy in Kufic or Thuluth script, likely representing repetitive blessing phrases. The lid is topped with a multi-tiered, slightly domed finial. The cylindrical body is adorned with a horizontal band of decorative cartouches containing further calligraphic script set against a background of red pigment or degraded inlay. The underside of the base features a prominent raised six-petaled rosette. A modern sticker numbered 349 is adhered to the base.
