Lot 33: TWO ILLUMINATED CALLIGRAPHIC ALBUM PAGES, INDIA, MUGHAL, 19TH CENTURY

The first leaf features a central panel with several lines of diagonal script, flanked by smaller vertical and horizontal text panels. It is enclosed within multiple decorative borders, including a thin blue and gold frame and a wider gold border with scrolling floral motifs. The outermost cream-colored margin is decorated with hand-painted polychrome floral sprays, including lilies and roses, in the Gul-o-Bulbul (Rose and Nightingale) tradition. The reverse side contains a grid of cursive calligraphic exercises and administrative notations. The second leaf follows a similar composition with a central diagonal panel of Nasta’liq calligraphy on a floral gold ground, framed by a rich blue border and an intermediate border of pink and red blossoms. The wide outer margin is finished in a yellow-ochre tone with varied floral specimens. The reverse side contains a block of Shikasteh (broken) script.
