Lot 290: A PERSIAN KASHAN DABIR HAND KNOTTED WOOL RUG, CIRCA 1920

This hand-knotted pile carpet is a Kashan Dabir, originating from the renowned weaving center of Kashan, Iran. The rug is constructed with a wool pile on a cotton foundation. The design features a classic Mohtasham style composition with a large, multi-lobed central medallion in navy and sky blue set against an ivory field. The field is densely populated with a Shah Abbasi pattern of scrolling vines, flowering palmettes, and floral sprays, further distinguished by symmetrical pairs of decorative urns positioned at the top and bottom. Four corner spandrels with a madder red ground provide contrast, each containing intricate floral motifs. A vertical sky-blue rectangular frame defines the central field area. The rug is enclosed by a primary wide border with an ochre-gold ground decorated with large floral palmettes and rosettes, flanked by several narrow guard borders with repeating floral vine patterns. A woven cartouche is present in the outer guard border at one end, containing Persian script that identifies the city of manufacture as Kashan and includes a workshop signature. The reverse of the rug shows a high knot density and well-defined weave characteristic of urban workshop production.
