Lot 278: AN OTTOMAN BALKAN GOLD METALLIC EMBROIDERED CEPKEN VEST, EARLY 19TH CENTURY

This is an early 19th century Ottoman Balkan festive over-garment, traditionally known as a cepken or jelek. The sleeveless vest is constructed with a stiff upper bodice and a dramatically flared, paneled A-line skirt section. The exterior base fabric, likely a heavy wool or felt, is almost entirely covered in dense, high-relief hand-embroidery using gold-tone metallic thread and applied soutache braid. The decorative program includes elaborate scrolling foliage, stylized circular motifs, and geometric bands. The back of the garment features horizontal bands of varied braid and openwork metallic lace. The interior is fully lined with a vibrant fuchsia-pink silk damask featuring a woven floral and scrolling leaf pattern. A yellow silk pleated trim accents the interior neckline and front openings. All edges are reinforced with multiple rows of metallic braid. The garment is designed as an open-front piece without primary closures. A series of small metal rings are hand-sewn along the interior bottom hem, likely used for securing the garment or attaching internal weights. This type of ornate gold-work was a traditional status symbol in Ottoman-influenced regions of the Balkans, including modern-day Greece, Albania, Serbia, and North Macedonia.
