Lot 240: A CHINESE OR SINO-TIBETAN PIERCED IRON AND PARCEL-GILT SADDLE CANTLE PLAQUE, 16TH - 17TH CENTURY

This object is a decorative iron saddle fitting, identified as a cantle plaque, featuring an arched form with downward-sloping lateral wings. The piece is constructed from wrought iron using an intricate openwork or pierced technique. The central arch displays a vessel or vase motif from which scrolling foliage emerges. This central panel is flanked by two sinuous, five-clawed dragons shown in pursuit of flaming pearls amidst dense foliate and floral scrolls. The upper border contains a series of small fish rendered in relief, while the lower inner border is finished with a fine beaded pattern. The entire surface retains significant portions of original parcel-gilding, with gold and silver inlay highlighting the dragon bodies, floral elements, and borders against the dark iron ground. The item is presented on a modern, custom-fabricated black metal display stand.
