Lot 23: AN ISLAMIC MANUSCRIPT THE BOOK OF TEN CHAPTERS ON THE USE OF THE ALMUCANTAR QUADRANT, 1300 AH - 1882 A.D.

This item is a nineteenth-century Arabic manuscript compendium, or majmua, containing multiple astronomical and mathematical treatises. The primary work is identified on the opening page as Kitab al-Ashara Fusul fi al-Amal bi-al-Rub al-Marsum bi-al-Muqantarat (The Book of Ten Chapters on the Use of the Almucantar Quadrant) by the fifteenth-century scholar Jamal al-Din ibn al-Majdi. The volume also includes Sibt al-Mardini’s Hidayat al-Sa’il ila al-Rub’ al-Kamil, Al-Naysaburi’s Al-Risala al-Jawdiyya, Baha’ al-Din al-‘Amili’s Tashrih al-Aflak, and a work on the properties of letters attributed to Al-Ghazali. The text is written in a neat Naskh script with section headings and key terms in red ink. A colophon identifies the scribe as the Syrian polymath and Hanbali jurist Abd al-Qadir ibn Ahmad ibn Badran al-Dumani (1848–1927), noting completion at the beginning of Muharram 1300 AH (approximately November 1882 CE). The manuscript features several mathematical tables, astronomical diagrams, and extensive marginalia in multiple hands. The binding is full dark brown leather with a central blind-stamped mandorla featuring floral motifs and a triple-ruled border.
