Lot 207: A LARGE CHINESE BLUE AND WHITE PORCELAIN CHARGER, PROBABLY 15TH CENTURY

Large blue and white porcelain charger, attributed to 15th-century China. The shallow vessel is decorated in underglaze blue with a central floral medallion surrounded by concentric geometric and foliate borders. The wide cavetto features a continuous scroll of peony blossoms and dense foliage. The rim is finished with a narrow band of floral motifs. The exterior wall is decorated with a scrolling lotus vine. The cobalt pigment displays characteristic heaping and piling where the pigment has concentrated and darkened during firing. The unglazed base features a circular recessed area treated with a matte, dark reddish-brown wash, often referred to as a chocolate wash.
