Lot 198: AN INDIAN KALIGHAT SCHOOL WATERCOLOR PAINTING OF THE GODDESS KALI, 1860 - 1920

Depicts the Hindu goddess Kali with traditional iconographic attributes. The deity is rendered as a four-armed figure with black skin, a protruding red tongue, and a third eye centered on her forehead. In her upper left hand, she holds a curved sacrificial sword known as a khadga, and in her lower left hand, she holds a severed head. Her right hands are positioned in gestures representing the abhaya and varada mudras. She is adorned with a decorative crown, large earrings, and a mundamala or garland of severed heads draped over a striped orange and yellow garment. The figure is set against a flat yellow wash background with a radiating green and yellow halo. A blue rectangular outline is visible at the base of the figure. The painting is housed in a simple black frame under glass.
