Lot 103: A KASHMIRI LACQUERED PAPIER-MACHE KASHKUL BOWL, KASHMIR INDIA, 20TH CENTURY

This kashkul, or boat-shaped begging bowl, is a product of the A. Peer workshop in Srinagar, Kashmir. Constructed from papier-mache, the vessel features an exterior finished in dense gold and black lacquerwork. The decorative scheme consists of a meticulous hazara-gul or thousand flowers motif, characterized by repeating miniature blossoms and scrolling vines. The interior is finished with a polished metallic gold-toned surface. The terminal ends of the bowl are fitted with cast metal dragon-head mounts. On the underside of the vessel, a rectangular paper label is affixed.The label reads MADE by A. PEER in an arch at the top, followed by 3rd. BRIDGE, SRINAGAR, KASHMIR, INDIA, and No. 66 with the number handwritten in blue ink.
