Lot 59:
Description
This mid-19th century Persian dervish cap, or taj, is constructed from a green fabric base, likely wool or felt, and is divided into four main sections by raised, multi-colored bands of metallic and silk thread. Each of the four panels features a cream-colored, lobed cartouche containing black-thread Arabic calligraphy that honors significant figures in Islam, specifically Ali ibn Abi Talib and Hasan ibn Ali, both followed by the honorific alayhi al-salam (peace be upon him). The cap’s borders and seams are decorated with scrolling and geometric embroidery in gold-toned and reddish-purple threads. The interior is finished with a green fabric lining.
