Lot 341: A BLUE AND WHITE CHINESE MOTIFS SAFAVID CERAMIC DISH, PERSIA, 17TH CENTURY

The dish is of shallow, rounded form with a recessed footring and is decorated in underglaze blue beneath a light celadon-tinted glaze. The interior depicts a central figure, possibly a scholar or an immortal, traversing a landscape. To the left is a prominent pine tree with distinctive circular needle clusters, while a smaller flowering tree and a bird in flight are situated to the right. The exterior is decorated with a continuous scrolling foliate and floral band. The rim is finished with a ferruginous brown dressing. A painted mark in underglaze blue is located on the centre of the base, comprising a single vertical stroke intersected by three horizontal strokes with a wedge-shaped device at the base. This mark does not spell a name and is a shop mark or an abstracted character. The base and footring exhibit characteristic firing grits and kiln adhesions typical of this provincial export ware.
