A QAJAR TINNED-COPPER KASHKUL BEGGARS BOWL WITH DRAGON HEAD TERMINALS, 18TH – 19TH CENTURY

The vessel is constructed from tinned copper with intricate engraved and chased decoration throughout. The upper body features a wide horizontal band of continuous Naskh calligraphy set against a ground of fine scrolling floral vines and foliage. Below this, the hull is decorated with multiple registers of repeating arabesques, split-palmettes, and circular floral medallions. The two pointed terminals are mounted with cast zoomorphic heads in the form of dragons, which hold a heavy brass link suspension chain. The bowl stands on a raised foot of stylised quatrefoil or cross-shaped design, similarly decorated with engraved scrolling motifs.
